After several meetings and discussions, below is our new bottle policy that is effecive immediately. If any questions, please contact Mr. Tuller or Mrs. Armstrong.

NEW BOTTLE POLICY

WHY: The bottles aren't being picked up regularly and the troop needs the money

WHO: Everyone! This means you, too!

WHEN:  Immediately

The new policy is based on an annual budget that the SPL (senior patrol leader) and his council will create. The annual budget will cover the costs of all the campouts, hikes, and other activities for the next year. Let's call this the "BUDGET". Each scout is responsible for his share of the budget. So we divide the budget by the number of scouts in the troop. Let's call this the "SHARE". Each scout will get 20% of the bottle money he brings in until he reaches his share of the budget. Once he reaches his "share", he will then get 50% of the money he brings in.
A scout can get bottle money in two ways:

  1. He goes to the bottle boxes or the landfill on Barney Downes Road and collects bottles & cans, takes them to a store, redeems them, and turns the money in at the next meeting.

  2. He collects bottles & cans from the bottle boxes, the landfill, wherever, and saves them until the next "BIG SORT".

Wait--what's a "Big Sort"? That is when the troop all bring in their bottles and cans and everyone sorts, counts and bags cans & bottles for the redemption center. The bottles & cans will be counted, and the money divided among the scouts participating in the "Big Sort". Let's call that the "BIG SORT SHARE" or "BSS". If the sorting scout has not reached his "share" of the "budget", he will get 20% of the BSS credited to his account. If he has reached his share of the budget, he will get 50% of the BSS credited to his account.

For example: The last "Big Sort" was Aug 21. There were 6 scouts there (plus a lot of hard working parents, for whom we are all really grateful!). A total of 7064 cans & bottles were sorted, counted, and bagged. The troop will get $353.20 for them. $353.20 divided by 6 scouts gives us a "BSS" of $58.87. Since the scouts who sorted have not reached their "share", they each receive 20% of $58.87 in their individual accounts (or $11.76 if you do the math)

Confused?? No worries, it will become clear with practice! The bottom line is: pick up those bottles & cans, and redeem them--it is good for the troop, it is good for you, it is good for the environment.

WHAT: a new system to allocate money from cleaning out the bottle boxes
